Gazprom and Kazakhstan strengthen new gas route to Asia

Gazprom has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Kazakhstan to develop a new cross-border gas pipeline connecting both countries’ gas transport systems, reinforcing their energy diversification strategy toward Asia.

According to the agreement, the infrastructure will start with a transport capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year (Bcm/year), expandable to 45 Bcm/year in a second phase. The pipeline will originate in Russia’s Tyumen region, cross northern Kazakhstan, and link to the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, which will be upgraded to handle increased volumes.

The project will strengthen bilateral energy integration and enable the gasification of northern and northeastern regions of Kazakhstan, while facilitating future connections to export corridors toward China.

It is currently in the conceptual engineering and design phase, with modular construction planned in sections featuring SCADA systems, compressor stations, and anti-corrosion protection. The estimated execution period ranges from three to five years, depending on logistics and regulatory conditions.

This development marks a turning point in Gazprom’s strategy to redirect its exports outside Europe amid a shifting geopolitical landscape and global energy transition.
